David meets Goliath in IOB dispute

Not welcome here: Energy developer Patrick Nye and architect, Jennifer Hilliard are neighbors and leaders with Ingleside on the Bay Coastal Watch Association. The non-profit environmental advocacy group, and others, are asking a federal court in Austin to block Enbridge from expanding its docks to handle even more massive crude oil tankers like the one you see in this image, recently moored at the former MODA facility. The suit claims the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers overstepped its bounds when they granted MODA – now, Enbridge a permit to build the new pier, already under construction. The giant vessels, the group contends, churn up silt from the ocean bottom, destroying seagrass vital to sustaining marine habitat. Ingleside Index

Dangerous dust? Patrick Nye points to what appear to be sand particles that lightly coat a tabletop on his street level patio. He suggests these ‘particulates’ – as they’re known – could be from the dredging Enbridge is doing, creating a ‘spoils island’ to make way for the new shipping pier under construction. Nye doesn’t know if these particles are harmful, or even if he knows they came from the Enbridge site. He adds gaseous vapors from the fuel farm and other possible environmental threats are harmful to not just marine life, but humans, too. Ingleside Index
