A federal judge sentenced a Tucson man to more than eight years in prison last week for drug trafficking, according to authorities.
Jose Antonio Ornelas, Jr. previously pled guilty to possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
The 33-year-old was sentenced to 98 months in jail and four years of supervised release.
Ornelas ran from law authorities after attempting to buy methamphetamine for $2,250 on October 3, 2024, according to prosecutors.
As he hurried away, he failed to stop at a red light and proceeded to drive in the opposite lane of traffic.

Police located him in a nearby apartment complex.
They discovered he had more than just methamphetamine. Ornelas also possessed fentanyl pills, a .45 caliber extended magazine, a narcotics ledger, and a scale, according to authorities.
The Drug Enforcement Administration oversaw the investigation in this case, while Assistant US Attorney Ashley Culver of the District of Arizona in Tucson handled the prosecution.
