Texas Prison Guard Taken Into Custody After Inmate Stabbed To Death

It’s common knowledge that crime occurs everywhere, including Texas. And the chance of violence increases when several criminals are housed together, such as in a Texas prison. Unfortunately, a violent incident occurred recently at a Texas prison, and the guard on duty did nothing after learning of the brutality, and that guard has now been detained.

Where Did the Violence Take Place?

KLTV reports that the incident took place in the Polunsky prison in Livingston, Texas.

Timeline: From Stabbing to Arrest

Correctional officer Ty Wilkerson, 26 years old, was working in the prison and was made aware of an inmate who was stabbed by multiple inmates around 6:02 a.m. According to the affidavit, Wilkerson did not help or report the stabbing to other officials. The inmate was discovered lifeless in his cell at 9:44 a.m.

Jarrod Tolbert, 45, died while in custody, according to the state custodial death report. He was pronounced dead by medical staff on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11:09 p.m. .

Charges And Allegations Explained

Wilkerson, who has since been detained, has been accused of violating the civil rights of those in custody. He was booked into the Polk County Jail on Monday but was released the same day.

According to an affidavit about the incident, “the defendant’s failure to render aid and notify authorities contributed to the victim inmate’s death.”
