You never know what drivers keep in the back of a semi-truck. It could be a load of fruit or electronics. However, people do occasionally transport contraband. Police in Ohio were astonished to discover $1.8 million in cocaine in a trailer.
Semi-truck driver busted with $1.8 million worth of cocaine
Police officers reacted to complaints of a suspicious semi-truck traveling northbound on I-75 in Frenchtown Township, Ohio.
It was peculiar since the trucker chose to avoid the weigh station when he was required to stop for the scales.
This could suggest that the trucker was aware of the overweight nature of his load or that he was not acting appropriately. Driving with overweight cargo can cause substantial road damage.
According to WHMI, police officers conducted a traffic stop. The tractor-trailer was pulled over, and the driver was identified as a 26-year-old Ontario, Canada, resident.
He explained that he was transporting a shipment from Ohio to Canada, and the authorities asked to search the trailer. After obtaining consent, they discovered 70 vacuum-sealed parcels in cardboard boxes stashed in the trailer storage compartment.
Random parcels tested positive for cocaine. The trucker was arrested despite his claim that he had no idea what was in the parcels. He was accused of the intent to supply cocaine in excess of 1,000 grams.
The cocaine they discovered is worth $1,820,000. This is based on the street value of one kg, which ranges from $13,000 to $26,000.
