The Nebraska City Police Department made an arrest after a 6-year-old boy was hit and killed near a farmers market on Thursday.
Vernon Christiansen, 59, of Percival, Iowa, is being held in the Otoe County Jail on charges of motor vehicle homicide, possession/consumption of an open alcohol container, bald tire or improper tire use, and obstructed view of the driver.
The jail verified that Christiansen was arrested in connection with the child’s death.
At 4:40 p.m., Nebraska City Police and Nebraska City Fire-Rescue were summoned to the area behind the Veterans Memorial Building near 8th Street and 1st Corso after a pedestrian was struck. Upon their arrival, the cops found that a vehicle had struck and killed a 6-year-old boy.
This occurred approximately an hour after the weekly farmers market nearby opened.
According to News Channel Nebraska, the pickup driver apparently hit the toddler in an alley near the farmers market.

Lutheran Family Services TASC (Targeted Adult Service Coordination) will be at the Nebraska City Police Department from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday to assist anyone touched by these events.
The Nebraska State Patrol, Otoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Otoe County Attorney’s Office all assisted in the investigation.
