A 25-year-old man who is already on probation is facing fresh charges after drugs and a gun were discovered during a recent traffic check in River North, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Police Community Safety Team stopped a car as part of the agency’s River North Initiative.
Officers reportedly smelled marijuana as they approached the car and discovered “cannabis residue” in the center console.
The driver, Mauriel Scott-Shepard, was requested to depart the vehicle with two passengers while officers searched it.
During the search, investigators discovered suspected marijuana and promethazine (also known as “lean”), as well as a backpack containing a Glock 30 handgun with an extended magazine, a second pistol magazine, and identification linked to Scott-Shepard.
The sheriff stated that Scott-Shepard does not have a valid FOID card or concealed carry license and is currently on probation with the Illinois Department of Corrections.
He was brought into custody, and felony charges were filed.
Officials did not specify what Scott-Shepard was on probation for.
He is still in jail at the Cook County Jail.
