A Colombian “drug lord” was arrested this month for alleged involvement in 29 murders and other crimes, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In a release, ICE officials described the drug kingpin, Guillermo Perez Alzate, as a “confessed murderer and criminal alien.”
“Perez is a former paramilitary leader of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, a transnational criminal organization that uses drugs to finance its illegal activities,” the release reads.
According to ICE, Perez was extradited to the United States in 2008 and arrested for drug smuggling, along with 13 other alleged members of Colombia’s United Self-Defense Forces.
Perez was sentenced to 17 years in prison for conspiracy to import and trade cocaine in Florida, and during his trial, he revealed to a judge that he had murdered 29 individuals, according to authorities.
In 2009, he was detained again by Georgia correctional officials for conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the United States, and an immigration judge in Orlando ordered his removal from the nation, though the judgment was eventually deferred, according to ICE.
“He was ordered deported in 2017, so he’ll face justice for his alleged crimes against the people of Colombia,” ICE officials wrote.
