Authorities in South Carolina are investigating two women’s “suspicious” deaths as homicides after their bodies were discovered in rural woods about 116 miles from Charleston, where they lived.
The remains were discovered Friday afternoon in Rembert, 41 miles east of Columbia, according to a news release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Rembert has a population of 242, while the county has 42,330 persons.
Dennis stated that a person discovered the bodies and met the deputies when they arrived.
“We have begun our investigation, and we will have to wait until we have the results of the autopsies to know more,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said at the scene Friday. “In the meantime, we cannot speculate. At this time, we can only say we are investigating these deaths as suspicious.”
The coroner’s office stated that the deaths would be probed as homicides, according to ABC News and The State newspaper. Christine Marie McAbee, 35, and Kristen Grissom, 38, are from Charleston.
The coroner said that autopsies would be performed in Charleston on Tuesday.
Coroner Robert Baker did not say how long the women had been dead or if they were slain in the woods.
