An 18-year-old from Canyon, Texas, is in prison after authorities thwarted an alleged plot to attack local Independence Day celebrations. Kevin Hunt was apprehended on July 2, 2025, after a collaborative investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Amarillo Police Department, and Randall County District Attorney’s Office.
Hunt was apprehended on an emergency mental health warrant after detectives discovered concerning social media activity, including self-harm and plans to carry out a mass casualty assault, according to a DPS Northwest Texas Region press release. The probe uncovered Hunt’s frustrations and ideas on social media, raising fears about a possible targeted attack. The DPS swiftly stepped in when they observed Hunt engaging in activities akin to site surveillance before the festivities.
Authorities, in coordination with the Randall County District Attorney’s Office, executed a search warrant at Hunt’s home, seizing explosive materials, multiple weapons, and several hundred rounds of ammunition. According to a news release, Hunt was accused on July 11 of possessing explosive components.
The inquiry is still underway, and no other information is available at this time. The episode highlights the necessity of public alertness and the success of the Texas Behavioral Threat Assessment Intervention and Prevention Program Strategy, which was reinforced by Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s mandate to expand anti-terrorism resources statewide.
The DPS urges Texans to report suspicious activity through the iWatchTexas program, which allows the public to submit tips via mobile app, online, or phone. Law enforcement analysts secretly examine all reports, according to the DPS Northwest Texas Region. The iWatchTexas app is available for iPhone and Android, but it is not designed for emergencies, which should be reported by dialing 911.
