A second suspect wanted in connection to the deadly June 1 mass shooting at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis has been apprehended in Chicago.
Marquez Demar Hill-Turnispeed, 23, of Minneapolis, faces one charge of second-degree murder and three charges of attempted second-degree murder. His arrest comes two weeks after Zyere J. Porter, 23, was arrested and accused in connection with the shooting, which killed one person and injured six others.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court, witnesses identified Hill-Turnispeed as a suspect in a gang firefight at Boom Island Park.
According to the allegations, Hill-Turnispeed admitted to the Boom Island shooting after being captured by officials in Chicago. He allegedly told police that he fired at the vehicle inhabited by Stageina Whiting, 23, of Brooklyn Center, who died of a gunshot wound to the torso.
Six people were hurt in the incident, including one victim who was still in serious condition and paralyzed on Wednesday, according to the complaint.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the aftermath of the incident as a “war zone” due to the quantity of shot casings discovered at the location.
Police arrived at the tumultuous scene around 9:30 p.m. on June 1 with an estimated 100 people remaining at the park, where a huge gathering “escalated into gunfire,” according to the initial release.
Porter is still in detention on $3 million bail, charged with one crime of second-degree murder, four charges of attempted second-degree murder, and one act of drive-by shooting.
