A 32-year-old Hazel Crest man is under arrest after allegedly robbing a woman on a lakefront trail near Belmont Harbor and wounding a police officer during a scuffle while being brought into custody.

According to a detention petition filed by prosecutors, the robbery took place shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday, July 1, in the 3400 block of North Lake Shore Drive, near the Belmont Harbor dog beach.

Coleman allegedly attempted to take one of the couple’s Divvy bikes as they stopped along the lakefront trail. He then violently removed the 43-year-old woman’s red book bag, ripping it off her back and breaking the straps, according to the petition.

Witnesses informed officers that Coleman stepped into the road and dumped the bag, which contained two sweaters and a pair of glasses. Cars passing by scattered the articles, causing them to blow into traffic. Police later found the bag, but not its contents.

Coleman escaped on foot over Lake Shore Drive and was found in the median immediately south of Diversey Harbor. Prosecutors said a Chicago police officer suffered a dislocated shoulder while attempting to subdue him.

At a hearing this week, Judge Luciano Panici Jr. ordered Coleman jailed on accusations of robbery, aggravated violence against a peace officer, and resisting arrest.
